A passerby reported heavy smoke coming from a house on Strong Avenue in Wheeling this morning, prompting an immediate 9-1-1 response. Firefighters from Station 42 on Dundee Road were among the first to arrive, spotting a large fire visible from their location. Upon reaching the scene, they found flames engulfing an attached garage of a single-family home and quickly upgraded the alarm to a Code 4 working fire.
Wheeling Engine 42 was the first unit on the scene, deploying four 2-1/2-inch lines to tackle the blaze. Two of the lines were used to knock down the majority of the fire in minutes, while the other two were brought in as crews entered the structure and worked on different sides. Smoke filled the living areas, but the fire was contained before it could spread further into the house.
Larry Shapiro, a local photographer, arrived shortly after the initial attack began but missed the heaviest smoke and flames. He captured several images of the incident, including a Corvette destroyed in the garage and parts of the vehicle made with fiberglass. A commercial-style garage sustained heavy damage, and firefighters worked to control the remaining embers.
Buffalo Grove Tower 25 was sent to the roof for ventilation, while Northbrook Engine 10 and Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Ambulance 52 provided mutual aid. The fire was fully under control within a short time, and no injuries were reported. More photos from Larry Shapiro will be posted on his website soon, offering a closer look at the event.
