A passerby reported heavy smoke coming from a home on Strong Avenue in Wheeling this morning, prompting an immediate 9-1-1 response. Firefighters arrived to find a significant fire in the attached garage of a single-family residence. The first arriving unit, Wheeling Engine 42, quickly upgraded the alarm to a Code 4 working fire and deployed two 2-1/2-inch lines to tackle the blaze.
The fire was contained before it could spread into the main house, though thick smoke filled the living areas. Multiple hose lines were used as crews worked to suppress the flames. A second engine and a tower company joined the effort, with Buffalo Grove Tower 25 providing roof ventilation to help manage the heat and smoke.
Larry Shapiro, a local photographer, arrived shortly after the initial attack began but missed the heaviest part of the fire. He captured several images of the scene, including a damaged Corvette in the garage and parts of the structure that had suffered severe burn damage. His photos show firefighters working aggressively to control the fire, with one line advancing from the front and another deployed into the garage opening.
Northbrook Engine 10 and Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Ambulance 52 also responded for mutual aid. The fire was eventually brought under control, and no injuries were reported. Residents were safely evacuated, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation. More photos from Larry Shapiro’s collection will be posted on his website in the coming days.
