The Barrington Fire Department received an emergency call just before the shift change this morning for a barn fire at 21089 Ridge Road in Barrington Hills. Upon arrival, the first units spotted light smoke coming from the road and proceeded down the private driveway with Engine 363, Tanker 362, and Quint 362. Meanwhile, Engine 361 laid 1,000 feet of large diameter hose back to the street, where two 3,000-gallon portable water tanks were set up to supply the fire scene. The area lacks hydrants, so the department relied on these tanks and a tanker shuttle system to maintain water flow.
A MABAS Box Alarm was immediately called, and within minutes, it was upgraded to a second alarm. Additional resources from Long Grove, Palatine Rural, Round Lake, Wauconda, Cary, and Lincolnshire-Riverwoods arrived, along with units from Palatine, Elgin, and Mundelein. Ambulances from Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, and Deerfield, as well as engines from Algonquin, Fox River Grove, Lake Zurich, Carpentersville, West Dundee, and Hoffman Estates, also responded.
A Google Maps image shows the location of the fire, which is situated on Ridge Road. Another photo captures the intense flames engulfing the center section of the barn and garages. Tim Olk was on the scene shortly after the initial call, and Larry Shapiro arrived about 30 minutes later. Their photos and video will be posted as they become available.
Inside the burning structure, there was hay, a boat, a forklift, and various mechanical equipment. Fortunately, several horses were safely moved to an adjacent pasture. The alarm was later upgraded to a fourth alarm specifically for tankers, bringing in additional support from Fox Lake, Prospect Heights, Bartlett, Nunda Rural, and Crystal Lake.
One firefighter was taken to the hospital with an ankle injury, but no other injuries have been reported. The fire is still under control, and crews are working to fully extinguish the blaze and secure the area. Updates will follow as more information becomes available.
