The Barrington Fire Department responded to a barn fire on Ridge Road in Barrington Hills this morning, just as shift change was underway. The call came in around the time of the incident, and first-arriving units—Quint 362, Tanker 362, and Engine 363—found light smoke visible from the road. They proceeded down the private driveway to assess the situation.
Engine 361 laid 1,000 feet of large diameter hose back to the street, where two 3,000-gallon portable tanks were set up for water supply. This area of Barrington Hills doesn’t have hydrants, so the crews relied on these tanks and a tanker shuttle system to support firefighting efforts.
A MABAS Box Alarm was immediately requested, and within minutes, it was upgraded to a second alarm. Additional resources were dispatched, including tankers from Long Grove, Palatine Rural, Round Lake, and Wauconda, along with squads from Cary and Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, trucks from Palatine, Elgin, and Mundelein, ambulances from Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, and Deerfield, and engines from Algonquin, Fox River Grove, Lake Zurich, Carpentersville, West Dundee, and Hoffman Estates.
The fire quickly grew, engulfing the center section of the barn and garages at 21089 Ridge Road. Inside, the structure contained hay, a boat, a forklift, and various mechanical equipment, along with tools and supplies. Fortunately, several horses were safely moved to an adjacent pasture.
As the fire progressed, the alarm was escalated to a fourth alarm, specifically for tankers, bringing in additional support from Fox Lake, Prospect Heights, Bartlett, Nunda Rural, and Crystal Lake.
Tim Olk arrived shortly after the Box Alarm was called in, capturing images of the scene. Larry Shapiro followed about 30 minutes later, also documenting the event. More photos and video will be posted as they become available.
One firefighter sustained an ankle injury and was taken to the hospital for evaluation. Despite the intensity of the fire, no serious injuries were reported, and the blaze is now under control. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
