Last night, Chicago firefighters were called to a large warehouse complex at 4834 S. Halsted following reports of a fire. Upon arrival, the first units encountered a five-story, fire-resistive building measuring 200 by 500 feet, with heavy smoke billowing from the ground floor. After a brief interior attack, crews withdrew to focus on defensive operations. The incident was upgraded to a 2-11 alarm, and Engine 81, along with Hose Wagon 6-1-1, was dispatched as a special call.
According to *The Chicago Tribune*, one firefighter was injured during an extra-alarm fire at an abandoned factory in the Back of the Yards neighborhood. The blaze, which started around 5:45 p.m. in an L-shaped building west of 48th Street and Halsted Avenue, was under control by late evening. The injured firefighter was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he remained alert and stable.
The structure, made of concrete, was easier to manage than the recent fire in Bridgeport, officials said. Around a dozen fire trucks were seen stationed near the site, while Halsted Street between 47th and 49th streets was closed off for safety. Deputy Fire Commissioner John McNicholas described the scene as filled with thick black smoke pouring from the windows.
Tower ladders and the Snorkel were positioned in case they were needed, but it was determined that the fire was limited to the contents inside, not the building itself. Additional resources were requested, including Engine 106 and the Mobile Ventilation Unit (9-2-3).
Reporters Tim Olk, Steve Redick, and Larry Shapiro arrived at the scene, but there wasn’t much going on by the time they got there. A video and several photos accompany the full *Tribune* article, offering a visual look at the response and the ongoing efforts to contain the fire.
