A local connection has emerged from the news of a Seagrave fire truck accident in New York last February. The driver, Glenn E. Bennett, is originally from the Northshore, and his story has drawn attention not only for the incident itself but also for his long and dedicated career in the fire service. According to reports from Hudsonvalleynewsnetwork.com, the incident occurred on February 16, 2016, at 11:47 a.m. on Interstate 84 eastbound near Lime Kiln Road in East Fishkill. Police said that 64-year-old Glenn E. Bennett, from Three Lakes, Wisconsin, was driving a brand new 2016 Seagrave pumper truck at the time. The vehicle was en route to the Islip Terrace Fire Department, where it was set to be put into service. Investigations suggest that Bennett suffered a medical emergency while driving, causing him to veer off the road onto the northern shoulder. The truck then entered the median and struck several trees before coming to a stop. Bennett was taken to Danbury Hospital and is currently in stable condition. Additional details shared by the same source reveal that Bennett, who has worked as a fire truck delivery driver for Seagrave for many years, had an extensive career in the fire service—over 30 years. He has delivered new fire trucks across the country, including a memorial truck to Manhattan following the events of September 11th. This latest incident happened while he was delivering a fire truck to Long Island, NY. During the drive, Bennett suffered a hemorrhagic stroke, which caused the crash. He was rushed to the hospital and is currently in critical condition, intubated and on a ventilator. His body is being given time to rest, and he has a drain to help reduce pressure in his brain. Despite the severity of his condition, Glenn has shown some positive signs, such as moving his hands and feet, and has even opened his eyes twice. However, he still experiences left-sided weakness from the stroke. Each day remains uncertain, but his family and friends are praying for his recovery. Glenn’s road to recovery is expected to be long, and he will likely be out of work for a significant period. A crowdfunding campaign called “You Caring Compassionate Crowdfunding†has been set up to support him during this difficult time. Glenn is described as a hardworking, kind, and well-respected man. He is a father of three daughters and a grandfather to two. Over the years, he has built strong relationships with firefighters across the country through his deliveries. He has also helped others in need, including those affected by the 9/11 attacks. His family is asking the firefighting community to come together and support one of their own. They believe that Glenn has given so much to others and now needs the same in return. If you're able, please consider donating or sharing this story to help raise awareness and support for Glenn’s recovery. As of now, Glenn is reported to be in a rehabilitation facility in southern Wisconsin, continuing his journey toward healing.
