This is from Steve Redick. I was called in for what I thought would be a small fire on the 5700 block of Newark, just around the corner from Engine 119’s station. It turned out to be a mayday with a 2-11 alarm. A large bungalow under renovation had fire reported on multiple floors. The operation was complicated by the fact that it happened during an ice and snow storm. Taking photos was nearly impossible due to the heavy snow ruining flash shots, and the low ambient light made it hard to get a good shutter speed. So, these images aren’t anywhere near the quality I usually capture. At the time, I was safely across the street watching the routine operations when I heard some shouting about someone falling into the basement. The DDC immediately declared a mayday, and there was quite a bit of commotion. But they quickly secured the injured firefighter. Later, I found out that the stairway between the first and second floor had collapsed—probably due to the ongoing renovations. I saw two members being carried out on stretchers with neck collars, and a few others walking wounded. All units were ordered out of the building, and a "par" was called—a regrouping took place, and the incident was eventually contained. From my position, I couldn’t see much more than what was happening on the surface. Maybe someone who was actually at the scene can provide more details. I’m curious how this mayday went with all the new radios and communication channels. I think this might have been the first emergency since the new radio system was implemented.
