The Long Grove Fire District was called on Monday to assess a house located in unincorporated Palatine, where a vehicle had previously collided with the structure. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered significant damage to a corner of the brick home and an attached enclosed deck that was beginning to collapse away from the building. The scene required immediate attention to prevent further structural compromise.
A series of images captured by Larry Shapiro showed the extent of the damage. One photo highlighted the deteriorated condition of both the house and the deck, while another depicted firefighters taking precise measurements to plan the bracing system. Additional photos revealed the use of Ellis clamps to stabilize the deck against a large tree, as well as a cutting station set up in the driveway for wood preparation.
Firefighters and emergency personnel from multiple departments, including Buffalo Grove Tower 25, Palatine Rural Ambulance 36, and units from Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Barrington, Libertyville, Lake Zurich, and Buffalo Grove, worked together to reinforce the structure. A roll-off container from Divisions 4 & 5 was also dispatched to provide additional lumber, as supplies had been depleted during the operation.
Technicians installed vertical braces and under-deck supports to prevent further damage to the house. Despite the complexity of the task, the team managed to complete the stabilization within less than an hour. Final photos showed the completed bracing system, with one image highlighting the critical role played by Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Squad 51, which provided essential tools and equipment.
The MABAS Divisions 4 & 5 lumber trailer, transported by a roll-off tractor from Round Lake, arrived on scene to replenish materials. The collaborative effort demonstrated the quick response and coordination among local emergency services to ensure the safety of the property and its occupants.
