On the 9th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, local fire departments across the area honored the memory of those lost with solemn ceremonies. Photos from the Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District (LRFPD) and the Palatine Rural Fire Protection District (PRFPD) capture the heartfelt moments of remembrance. At Station 541, members of the Lake County Honor Guard lowered the flag to half-mast in a touching tribute. The LRFPD also recreated the FDNY’s response to the 9/11 attacks by rolling out their apparatus at the exact time the first emergency calls were made. Uniformed firefighters and police officers gathered for a moment of silence and a flag ceremony, paying tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of first responders. Meanwhile, at Station 36 on Ela Road, the PRFPD joined forces with the Inverness Police Department, the Palatine American Legion, and community members for a rain-soaked but heartfelt ceremony. A wreath was placed at the flagpole, symbolizing unity and respect. The Palatine American Legion Color Guard presented the national colors, accompanied by bagpipers and a drummer, adding a powerful and emotional tone to the event. Firefighters from the IAFF Honor Guard raised the flag to half-mast, marking the somber occasion with precision and reverence. These events serve as a reminder of the enduring impact of 9/11 and the ongoing commitment of first responders to protect and serve.
