Excerpts from the JournalStandard.com: Stockton Fire Chief Randy Baysinger expressed confidence in his team's ability to respond to emergencies, even after a devastating fire damaged their station on Thursday. Despite the destruction, he emphasized that the department is still fully operational and ready to serve the community. The fire, which broke out in the early morning, caused significant damage to the firehouse, including six fire trucks, a trailer, and an ATV. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and officials are currently assessing whether the equipment can be repaired or needs to be replaced. "Within two hours of the fire, we received support from neighboring communities," Baysinger said. "We had spare equipment from other departments, which allowed us to continue responding to emergencies. We want the people of Stockton to know we're still here, and we're doing everything we can to keep them safe." Local fire departments, including German Valley, Shannon, and Scales Mound, have lent eight spare vehicles and equipment to the volunteer-based department. These resources are now being stored in a nearby facility. Additionally, donations of gear came from Davis, Lena, Mount Morris, Pearl City, and Polo. Baysinger also mentioned that at least 50 fire departments across the Midwest have reached out to offer assistance. He was deeply moved by the overwhelming response from the public and other emergency services. "In our line of work, we don't often hear 'thank you,' and sometimes it feels like the public doesn't realize how much we do. But this situation has shown me just how wrong that assumption is," Baysinger said. "People from over 100 miles away are reaching out to help. It really means a lot to all of us." The support has continued to grow. On the day of the fire, Rick Barkau, dealer principal of Barkau Automotive, presented Baysinger with a check. In March, his dealership will donate $100 to the Stockton Fire Department for every car sold. Chrysler has also pledged to match that amount for every Chrysler vehicle sold. "What really struck me about the fire was seeing how hard these volunteers work for the community," Barkau said. "I'm hoping to present them with a $7,500 check next month. I look at our average sales and think this is what we can do for a department that puts their lives on the line every day. I was truly upset when I saw the fire, and I wanted to do something to help." The Warren Fire Department is also contributing. They recently held a steak fry event, where they served 325 steaks and raised money for the Stockton Fire Department. Fire Chief Jeff Ege said they ran out of meat and had to buy more, and the fundraising efforts are still ongoing as they tally the total amount collected.
