BMW Group Director Qi Pu Ce said that despite the market's challenges, BMW's sales in China last year still exceeded 463,000, an increase of 1.7%. China has become BMW's largest single market in the world.
When attending the launch of the new engine factory in Shenyang, Zi Puze said that in May 2003, BMW Group and Brilliance Auto Group Holdings Co., Ltd. jointly established BMW Brilliance Auto Co., Ltd. in Shenyang, and successively built two production vehicles, Dadong and Tiexi. The factory, the first domestically produced BMW vehicle, was also put on the market in October of the year when the joint venture was established.
In October 2011, with the completion of the Tiexi plant, the annual production capacity of BMW Brilliance was rapidly increased to 300,000 units. After 2012, BMW began to produce 4-cylinder turbocharged engines in China and established a joint venture R&D center.
It is understood that BMW will implement the concept of “in China, for China” and start from the aspects of vehicle production, engine manufacturing and product development, and fully implement the third round of localization strategy.
The newly-launched BMW Brilliance new engine plant is the only engine plant of the BMW Group with a foundry outside Germany, which will produce the latest generation of BMW 3- and 4-cylinder engines. Together with factories in Munich, Germany, Hemsholm, and Steyr, Austria, the new engine plant forms BMW's advanced engine production network.
Dr. Hessen, President and CEO of BMW Brilliance Automotive Co., Ltd. said that BMW will actively participate in the “Made in China 2025” strategy, introducing more core technologies into China, and the core components of the engine will also be localized, including cylinder heads and crankcases.
The BMW Group and its partner, Brilliance Group, signed an agreement in 2014 to extend the cooperation to 2028, indicating that the BMW Group has long been optimistic about the Chinese market.
