Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania and the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia have been able to rewrite the body's immune system to fight leukemia. After a series of personalized cell treatments, the success rate of children and adults in cancer clinical trials has reached 89%. Fifty-nine patients from this year's hematology annual meeting and exposition held in New Orleans on December 7-10 presented this cutting-edge therapy called CTL019. The first three patients studied the slow changes in the first two chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) during the observation period. In addition, experiments have shown that this reprogrammed cell still survives in the patient's own body and is ready to combat any tumor cells. The success rate of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) reached 89%. Although most adults have adverse reactions to the treatment of ALL use, up to half of them eventually relapse, and the rate of complete cure is 40%. Once the patient relapses, the treatment is often ineffective. Many patients can't even get bone marrow transplants, just giving them their last hope. They have no other choice. Of the 32 adults with leukemia, 15 were treated with immunotherapy and seven showed that their condition was completely relieved. Of 19 patients with pediatric ALL, 19 showed complete remission. The treatment of the first pediatric patient after 20 months is still in remission. The new technology involves removing T cells from patients and then reprogramming them using transgenic technology. The redesigned T cells were then programmed to phagocytose tumor cells by using an antibody-like protein that binds to the surface of both CLL and all associated cancerous B cells. The cells are then transplanted into the body and they rapidly divide to replicate and attack the cancer cells. These cells are also designed for rapid proliferation - and experiments have shown that single cells can divide and replicate to more than 10,000 new cells.
