The Village of Wheeling has taken a major step forward in its efforts to modernize its fire services. On Monday, February 3, village trustees approved the site plans and a special use permit for the demolition and reconstruction of Fire Station 23, marking the official start of this long-awaited project. The existing station, located at 780 Wheeling Road, was built over four decades ago and is now in dire need of renovation. With an aging infrastructure and increasing demands from the community, the current facility can no longer meet the needs of the 75,000 residents it serves across a 10-square-mile area. Deputy Fire Chief Michael McGreal explained that the original design of the station was only intended to house one fire truck. Given the high cost of renovations, the decision was made to completely rebuild the station instead of trying to retrofit it with outdated systems. The new 11,203 square foot building will be constructed using cement and will feature a modern design with stone veneer, fiber cement siding, and accent panels in shades of gray, white, brown, and red. It will be located on the north end of the village-owned property near Echo Lake, just north of Hintz Road. The site plan includes a seam roof, front canopy entry, a south-side parking lot, and landscaped areas facing the street. To make this project possible, the village board approved a special use permit allowing the construction of a fire station in the I-1 zoning district, which is typically reserved for industrial or commercial use. At the time the original station was built in the 1970s, such a permit was not required. In addition to the special use permit, the board also approved variances for the property’s setback along Wheeling Road, reducing it from 35 feet to 30 feet, and increasing the allowed building height from 30 feet to 33 feet. Once the new Station 23 is completed, the fire department plans to replicate the same design for the upcoming renovation of Station 42 on Dundee Road, ensuring a consistent and modern approach to fire service infrastructure across the village.
