Excerpts from the ChicagoTribune.com:

Firefighters risk their lives every day so that others can live safely. No one understands this more than Andy O’Donnell, a former Lemont Fire Chief who served for 45 years in the fire service.

"At the age of ten, I had a life-changing experience," O’Donnell recalls. "I was walking to the library in South Shore when I saw a firehouse. A firefighter called me over and invited me in. He showed me around and told me to come back."

O’Donnell began his career as a volunteer firefighter in Crestwood before being hired by the Chicago Fire Department. He spent 34 years in the city, working in some of the busiest firehouses, including Engine 16, 46th & Cottage Grove, 40th & State, and the Pullman station. At one point, he oversaw 18 fire stations and later became Chief in Lemont.

This Saturday, O’Donnell will be at Glenbard East High School joining firefighters, sports stars, and fans for a charity basketball game aimed at raising funds for the Illinois Fire Chiefs Association Scholarship program. The event is a great way to support firefighters across the state who want to further their education.

"These scholarships are open to all firefighters, whether they're full-time, part-time, or volunteers," O’Donnell explains. "Last year, we awarded about $66,000 in grants. Education helps us serve our communities better, and it's important for everyone in the fire service to have access to learning opportunities."

O’Donnell is also passionate about preserving fire history through the Fire Museum of Greater Chicago. What started as a small group meeting in a Chicago rectory has grown into a museum housing thousands of fire-related artifacts.

"We opened the museum four years ago in an old firehouse at 52nd and Western," he says. "We have records of 23,000 firefighters who joined the Chicago Fire Department since its founding in 1858." The museum is always looking for donations of fire equipment and historical photos from Chicago and surrounding areas.

"We’re creating a binder on every fire company ever formed in Chicago and the suburbs," O’Donnell adds. "We’ve shown families pictures they never knew existed." The museum also aims to educate the public about the bravery and dedication of firefighters, especially after events like 9/11.

"After 9/11, people often asked me how firefighters could go into buildings like that," O’Donnell reflects. "Well, we're part of a unique group — we get a kick out of helping others, even if it means putting ourselves in danger."
