Hardinge Inc. recently showcased an automated production line for hydraulic spool valve housings using their T51 MSY SP Super-Precision turning center. This advanced system, developed in collaboration with Gosiger Automation, integrates a Fanuc M-10iA six-axis industrial robot with the Hardinge T-51 CNC multi-function sub-spindle lathe, alongside a Renishaw Equator programmable comparative gage. The gage excels in high-speed scanning and offers exceptional repeatability, making it ideal for maintaining precision during the manufacturing process.
Brad Devon, the sales manager at Hardinge Inc., highlights how this setup ensures extended periods of unattended operation without compromising the quality or precision of the parts being produced. "With this system, you can achieve consistent results even when the machine runs autonomously, ensuring that every component meets the required specifications," he explains. The compact footprint of the automation package makes it particularly appealing for facilities looking to optimize space usage while maintaining productivity.
The robot is strategically placed near the front of the lathe, slightly offset to the left-hand side of the machine's door, which enhances operator accessibility for maintenance and part changes. This configuration supports quick transitions between different part types, making it suitable for smaller production batches. The Hardinge T-51 MSY SP turning center, introduced in 2012, boasts a robust design featuring a 2-inch capacity and a collet-ready main spindle. Its unique spindle arrangement places the cutting zone close to the spindle bearings, providing unparalleled rigidity and stability during machining operations.
Equipped with through-spindle coolant and a part presence detector, the main spindle enhances operational efficiency. The A2-6 sub-spindle comes with a Hardinge Sure-Grip expanding collet that ensures precise clamping of components. The BMT 55 turret includes twelve stations capable of performing various tasks such as turning, boring, drilling, grooving, and milling. Precision sealing surfaces are crucial for these housings, requiring tight tolerances and high-quality finishes. The linear glass scales on each axis contribute to the machine's ability to deliver highly accurate and repeatable results.
This integration not only improves production efficiency but also reduces downtime by allowing easier access for maintenance activities. The combination of advanced robotics and precision engineering underscores Hardinge's commitment to delivering innovative solutions tailored to modern manufacturing needs. As industries continue to seek ways to enhance productivity while maintaining quality standards, setups like this one represent the future of flexible and reliable manufacturing processes.
