Hardinge Inc. recently showcased the automated production of hydraulic spool valve housings using its advanced T51 MSY SP Super-Precision turning center. The automated machine-tending solution, engineered by Gosiger Automation, integrates a Fanuc M-10iA six-axis industrial robot with the Hardinge T-51 CNC multi-function sub-spindle lathe, alongside a Renishaw Equator programmable comparative gage. This gage offers high-speed scanning capabilities with swift transitions between features, ensuring exceptional repeatability.
This system exemplifies how robotic automation can enhance process control when paired with precision gaging equipment. "With this setup, you can achieve extended periods of unmanned operation while guaranteeing the production of high-quality, tight-tolerance components—all within a compact footprint," explains Brad Devon, sales manager at Hardinge Inc.
The automation system requires minimal floor space and facilitates easy, ergonomic access to the machine tool for tasks like part changeovers and routine maintenance. Positioned near the front of the lathe and slightly offset to the left-hand side of the Hardinge machine's door, the Fanuc robot ensures maximum accessibility for operators. This configuration supports a diverse range of parts and accommodates smaller production runs with quick changeover features.
Introduced in 2012, the Hardinge T-51 MSY SP turning center boasts a 2-inch capacity and a collet-ready main spindle, placing the cutting area as close as possible to the spindle bearings. "This unique spindle design, combined with Hardinge's patented Harcrete-reinforced cast iron base, delivers an incredibly rigid machining process unparalleled in stability," adds Mr. Devon. The main spindle includes through-spindle coolant and a part present detector. Meanwhile, the A2-6 sub-spindle features a Hardinge Sure-Grip expanding collet for precise gripping. The Hardinge-designed BMT 55 turret supports twelve stations, accommodating various operations such as turning, boring, drilling, grooving, and milling. Achieving super-precise sealing surfaces on the housing is crucial, requiring high-precision surface finishes, excellent part roundness, and tight size control. To ensure machining accuracy, linear glass scales are installed on every axis of the machine.
Given the stringent requirements for the spool valve housing, maintaining tight tolerances is essential to ensure proper mating with the spool valve.
