The engine, bearing the steel beam and flanked by the honor guard, moved with precision toward the high school, where the steel would remain during the ceremony. A powerful moment came when the flag-draped steel was ceremoniously carried to the front steps of the high school, symbolizing the weight of history and remembrance.
The ceremony itself was filled with solemn rituals, including a 21-gun salute by the Park Ridge VFW color guard. A bell-ringing ceremony honored the fallen first responders, followed by a haunting rendition of "Taps," played by a local resident. Throughout the day, the honor guard stood vigilantly beside the beam, offering a constant reminder of the sacrifices made.
As the ceremony drew to a close, the honor guard folded the flag that had covered the 9/11 artifact, concluding the day’s proceedings with a final act of respect and closure. These images and moments encapsulate the deep sense of community and remembrance that characterized this important day.
