Last night (December 6, 2014), I responded to Station 4 for a fire that had spread into Station 5's area on the 1500 block of Schumaker Drive. If things hadn’t gone sideways, I might’ve made it there just a few minutes earlier when the fire was still raging. Engine 5 arrived first and called it a two-story building with intense flames erupting from the garage. They decided to go in for a quick attack. It was freezing cold out, but I was surprised to see so many people gathered on the block.
As I pulled up, I could see the flames shooting high above the house from around the corner. Quint 4 was already deploying its ladder as I approached. There was a significant exposure issue to the north; the siding had melted off and the wall was charred, looking like it came dangerously close to affecting the neighboring house. It seemed like three lines were in use, and the hydrant was conveniently located right there.
The responding companies included Engine 5, Engine 2, Quint 4, Truck 1, Engine 3 (which arrived late), Medics 2, 3, and 4, Battalion 1 from Bolingbrook, along with Lisle Battalion 51, a Plainfield medic unit, and Naperville Engine 2.
Truck 1 was the brand-new Dash CF 105' rear-mounted ladder truck that had been operational since the summer.
Attached are some photos taken by Dieterich Herndobler showing the intensity of the situation. The fire was clearly well underway by the time we arrived, and it took coordinated efforts from multiple units to bring it under control. It’s always a reminder of how quickly things can escalate, especially during winter conditions.

The whole incident left me thinking about how crucial teamwork is in situations like these. Each unit had a specific role, and everyone worked together efficiently despite the challenging circumstances. It’s moments like these that highlight the dedication and professionalism of our firefighters.
