On April 29, 2013, a major fire broke out at a car wash in Chicago. The incident was reported to the Englewood Fire Alarm Office, and Engine 47 was the first to arrive on the scene. They found a large one-story commercial building with a bow-string truss roof, fully engulfed in flames. Due to the severity of the fire, a Still & Box alarm was immediately requested.
Upon the arrival of the 18th Battalion, the decision was made to go defensive due to the unstable truss roof and heavy fire conditions. A 2-11 alarm was then activated. Tower Ladders 34 and 37, along with Squad 5A, were deployed for elevated operations. Despite the efforts, the fire remained intense, prompting a 3-11 alarm to be called by the Assistant Deputy Fire Commissioner.
Firefighters operated in a defensive mode for approximately two hours before the alarm was finally canceled by the Deputy Fire Commissioner. A wide range of units responded, including Engine 47 and 60, Tower Ladder 37, Truck 15, Squad 5, Command Van 2-7-4, and both the 17th and 18th Battalions for the full Still Alarm. For the Box Alarm, Engines 63 and 45, Truck 51, and the 21st and 23rd Battalions were dispatched. The 2-11 Alarm involved Engines 54, 72, 84, Truck 16, Tower Ladder 34, Engine 28 with Light Wagon 5, the 15th and 20th Battalions, and 6-4-4. Finally, the 3-11 Alarm included Engines 39, 123, 116, 50, 49, and 5-7-1.
