A Mayday call was immediately made, and the firefighter was found shortly after. Paramedics performed CPR on-site before transporting him to Advocate Christ Medical Center in critical condition. The fire, which started on the second floor, was fully extinguished by about 3:45 a.m. Chicago Fire Commissioner Jose Santiago confirmed that the firefighter, from Tower Ladder 34, was conducting a search on the second floor when he fell into an open elevator shaft leading to the basement. Emergency crews quickly accessed the area and transported him via Ambulance 22 to Christ Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. From the Chicago Tribune, it was reported that the victim was 42-year-old Dan Capuano, a 15-year veteran of the Chicago Fire Department. He was the father of three children. According to WGN-TV, Capuano was injured approximately 20 minutes after crews arrived at the scene of a fire at a vacant warehouse on 92nd and Baltimore. His death has left the fire department and the community in deep sorrow. The Chicago Building Department was dispatched to the site to assess the structural safety of the building following the incident.
