On the night of December 14, 2015, Chicago firefighters were called to a fire at an industrial building located in the 9200 block of South Baltimore Avenue. The incident occurred around 2:40 a.m., and as crews worked to contain the blaze, a firefighter from Tower Ladder 34 fell through a hole in the floor while conducting a search on the second level. A Mayday alert was immediately issued, along with a Still & Box Alarm and an EMS Plan I. The firefighter, later identified as Dan Capuano, 42, a 15-year veteran of the Chicago Fire Department, fell into an open elevator shaft leading to the basement. He was quickly rescued by his colleagues and transported via ambulance to Christ Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. According to reports from ABC7Chicago.com, the fire broke out in a three-story structure that was under construction, with multiple floor openings posing significant hazards. During the firefighting operation, one of those holes became the site of a tragic accident. Paramedics performed CPR on scene before rushing the injured firefighter to the hospital in critical condition. From the Chicago Tribune, it was revealed that Capuano, a father of three, had been working at the scene for about 20 minutes when the accident occurred. The fire, which started on the second floor, was fully extinguished by approximately 3:45 a.m. Officials are now investigating the cause of the fire and assessing the structural integrity of the building. The Chicago Building Department has since arrived at the scene to evaluate safety concerns. The loss of Captain Dan Capuano has left the entire fire department and the city in mourning, as they remember a dedicated public servant who gave his life in the line of duty. His bravery and sacrifice will not be forgotten.
