Shortly after 8 p.m. on Wednesday evening, a call came in about a basement fire at 884 Swan Boulevard in unincorporated Lake County. The location, situated off Inverrary Road west of Milwaukee Avenue, falls under the jurisdiction of the Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District. The subdivision has only one access point, making response and operations more challenging.
The first arriving units met the homeowner outside, who had severe burns to both feet. Smoke was visible from the center unit, prompting an immediate upgrade to a Code 4 (working fire) and then to a Box Alarm. Lincolnshire-Riverwoods sent two engines, a quint, three ambulances, and two chief officers. Additional support came from Buffalo Grove, Long Grove, and Northbrook, while rescue squads arrived from Prospect Heights and Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Station 51. Deerfield provided a truck, and extra ambulances came from Lake Zurich and Wheeling. Chief officers from Long Grove, Prospect Heights, Deerfield, and Mundelein also responded.
Lincolnshire-Riverwoods paramedics transferred care of the burn victim to a Wheeling ambulance, which transported the patient to Condell Hospital. Firefighters quickly brought the fire under control, but not before it damaged the first-floor ceiling, creating a hole on the second floor. A dog was lost in the fire.
The MESS Canteen was on scene, set up near the new dive/rehab unit at Lincolnshire-Riverwoods. Larry Shapiro and Tim Olk were also present. Photos and video from Larry are included here, with additional images from Tim coming soon.
Several photos capture the intensity of the incident. One shows broken windows and heavy smoke from the rear of the house just after crews entered. Another image shows light smoke escaping from the front door. A third captures the burn victim being moved to another ambulance. Additional shots show firefighters venting the roof, working on the structure, and a line of engines and trucks on scene.
