Print media affirms China's leading position in hydropower engineering in the world

The Indian media commented on August 25 that China, already the world’s largest hydropower country, is further building hydropower projects, making its hydropower far ahead of the world.

According to India’s “Economic Herald” on August 25, China recently developed a number of new water conservancy projects in Yunnan in order to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. After the completion of the Xiaowan Hydropower Plant, which has an annual generating capacity of 1.9 billion kWh, China’s installed hydropower capacity has exceeded 200 million kilowatts, putting Canada, the second-ranked country, and Brazil, the third-largest country, behind it.

According to reports, China has been highly dependent on coal for power generation, and 83% of the country's electricity is produced from burning coal. Hydroelectric power is the most competitive of the non-fossil energy sources and it will be the key to China's efforts to solve its emissions problem. According to the statistics of Chinese institutions, the annual power generation of hydropower stations in China is equivalent to the amount of electricity generated from burning 288 million tons of coal, which will allow China to emit 855 million tons of carbon dioxide.
