Replacing the Cable Guide

At Lug-All, durability and reliability are at the heart of everything we do. Our commitment to quality means that even after years of heavy use, our products remain reliable. However, over time, certain parts may become damaged due to wear and tear or improper usage. In this article, I'll walk you through how to handle a bent or damaged Cable Guide, which is an essential component of your Lug-All hoist. While we offer a one-year warranty on all our products, accidents and prolonged use can sometimes necessitate repairs. Many of these issues can be easily resolved at home, but for more complex problems, you can always send your equipment to us for professional assistance. You can also order replacement parts directly from our website by simply entering your Lug-All model number into the search bar.

The Cable Guide plays a crucial role in maintaining the proper alignment of your cable and ensuring the hoist operates smoothly. When loads aren't lifted or pulled in a straight line, significant pressure can build up on the cable guide, causing it to bend or even break. If this happens, don’t worry—there are straightforward solutions to fix or replace the guide.

In cases where the guide is merely bent, you can often restore it to its original shape using a vise. Securely clamp the end of the guide in the vise and use the hoist body as a lever. By rotating the hoist, you should be able to bend the guide back into place. However, if the damage is too severe, you'll need to replace the cable guide. The replacement process differs slightly depending on whether you're working with a small frame or a medium/large frame model.

Small Frame Models

If the cable guide is still intact, you’ll need a hammer, a notched chisel, and a sturdy vise. Here's how you can proceed:

Step 1: Secure the main frame firmly in the vise, making sure the Cable Guide faces downward. If the cable guide is bent, you may need to straighten it before attempting removal.

Step 2: Place the chisel point down on the Cable Guide and gently tap the back of the chisel with a hammer to knock the Cable Guide out of the frame.

However, if the cable guide is already broken, you’ll need additional tools such as a drill, a 3/16-inch drill bit, and either a 1/8-inch or 3/16-inch punch, depending on the size of the guide. Follow these steps:

Step 1: Using the drill with a 3/16-inch bit, carefully drill into the side of the main frame opposite the cable guide where you think the guide holes are located. Continue drilling until you reach the steel guide. Once both holes are drilled, use a hammer and punch to remove the guide legs.
Step 2: After removing the damaged cable guide, insert the legs of the new cable guide into the existing guide holes in the main frame. Gently tap the new guide with a hammer until it is fully seated in the main frame.

Medium/Large Frame Models

For larger models, you’ll need an angle grinder with a cut-off wheel, a hammer, and a 1/8-inch punch. If your hoist uses the newer style cable guide, you can skip Step 1.

Step 1: Use the angle grinder to carefully cut off the existing guide as close to the main frame as possible.

Step 2: Use the hammer and 1/8-inch punch to remove the roll pin from the eye bolt assembly, discarding it afterward.

Step 3: Remove the eye bolt, hex nut, and any associated components (such as the flat washer or damaged cable guide) from the main frame. Discard the flat washer or damaged cable guide.

Step 4: Install the eye bolt, hex nut, and the new cable guide onto the main frame.

Step 5: Insert a new roll pin into the eye bolt assembly, ensuring that the pin is flush with the surface of the nut.

Step 6: To install the wire rope into the new guide, you’ll first need to remove the hook from the wire rope assembly. For a detailed tutorial on this process, refer to our “Wire Rope Replacement” video.

Once the Cable Guide is either repaired or replaced, your Lug-All hoist is ready for continued use. Remember, regular maintenance and proper handling can significantly extend the life of your equipment.
