Replacing Your Cable Guide

At Lug-All, we pride ourselves on creating durable and reliable equipment. However, over time, parts can become damaged due to regular heavy use or improper handling. This article will guide you through replacing a bent or broken Cable Guide. While Lug-All offers a one-year warranty on its products, wear and tear over many years may require repairs. Most minor fixes are inexpensive and simple enough to do yourself, but for extensive damage, feel free to send it to us for professional servicing. Replacement parts can easily be found and ordered by entering your Lug-All model into our website's search bar.

The Cable Guide plays a crucial role in your Lug-All, ensuring that the cable stays aligned and the hoist moves correctly. When loads aren't lifted or pulled straight, significant pressure can build up on the cable guide, potentially causing it to bend or even break.

In cases where the guide is just bent, you can fix it by clamping the end in a vise and using the hoist body as a lever to rotate it back into its original position. However, if the cable guide is too damaged to be bent back into shape, the repair method differs depending on whether you have a small frame or a medium/large frame model.

Small Frame Models

If the cable guide is still intact, you'll need a hammer, a notched chisel, and a vise.

Step 1:
Securely clamp the main frame in the vise, making sure the Cable Guide faces downward. If the cable guide is bent, you may need to straighten it before attempting removal.

Step 2:
Position the chisel point down on the Cable Guide and gently tap the back of the chisel with a hammer to dislodge the Cable Guide from the frame.

If the cable guide is broken, you'll need a drill, a 3/16-inch drill bit, and either a 1/8 or 3/16-inch punch, depending on the guide size.

Step 1:
Using the drill with a 3/16-bit, carefully drill into the side of the main frame opposite the cable guide where you estimate the guide holes are located. Continue drilling until you reach the steel guide within the aluminum frame. Once both holes are drilled, use the hammer and punch to remove the guide legs.

Step 2:
With the old cable guide removed, insert the legs of the new cable guide into the existing guide holes in the main frame. Gently hammer the new guide until it is fully seated in the main frame.

Medium/Large Frame Models

You will need an angle grinder with a cut-off wheel, a hammer, and a 1/8-inch punch. If your hoist uses the newer style cable guide, you can skip Step 1.

Step 1:
Use the angle grinder to carefully cut off the existing guide as close to the main frame as possible.

Step 2:
Use the hammer and 1/8-inch punch to remove the roll pin from the eye bolt assembly, discarding it afterward.

Step 3:
Remove the eye bolt, hex nut, and any damaged cable guide or flat washer from the main frame, discarding them.

Step 4:
Install the eye bolt, hex nut, and the new cable guide onto the main frame.

Step 5:
Insert a new roll pin into the eye bolt assembly, ensuring it is flush with the surface of the nut.

Step 6:
To install the wire rope into the new guide, you will first need to remove the hook from the wire rope assembly. For a detailed guide on this process, check out our “Wire Rope Replacement” video.

Once your Cable Guide is repaired or replaced, your Lug-All is ready for continued use.
