This afternoon (May 6th, 2020), Northbrook firefighters were dispatched to 4040 Timberlane Drive, located in an unincorporated area of Cook County near the borders of Glenview, Wheeling, and Prospect Heights. Initial reports indicated smoke coming from a residence, but upon arrival, an officer from the Cook County Sheriff's Department reported visible flames on the roof. The address is in the southwesternmost part of Northbrook's jurisdiction, and the nearest hydrant for this several-block-long street is located at the entrance off Sanders Road, prompting a response from Prospect Heights Fire Protection District Tanker 9.
As the video uploaded by Larry Shapiro shows, Northbrook Engine 10 was the first to arrive on the scene and quickly laid out 5-inch hoses from the hydrant to the house. By the time the suppression teams arrived, they found an advanced attic fire with heavy smoke throughout the structure. The initial alarm was escalated to a working fire, which brought additional resources from neighboring Glenview and Wheeling departments, as well as all available Northbrook units and Prospect Heights Tanker 9.
The fire proved challenging due to the limited water supply initially available. Firefighters had to rely on tanker water until a reliable supply could be established. Ultimately, it seemed that three separate hose lines were utilized to fully extinguish the flames. Northbrook Tower 12 also played a crucial role in the operation by ventilating the roof from their elevated platform.
Fortunately, no one was home when the fire broke out. As images captured by Larry Shapiro show, firefighters worked diligently to contain the blaze, with heavy smoke billowing from the structure. They also entered the building with hose lines to ensure the fire was completely under control.
The entire operation involved a coordinated effort from multiple agencies, reflecting the importance of regional cooperation during emergency situations. While the exact cause of the fire remains under investigation, the quick response and teamwork undoubtedly helped prevent further damage or injury.
