This afternoon (May 6th, 2020), Northbrook firefighters were dispatched to 4040 Timberlane Drive, a location within an unincorporated part of Cook County near the borders of Glenview, Wheeling, and Prospect Heights. Initial reports indicated smoke coming from the house. Upon arrival, an officer from the Cook County Sheriff's Department reported seeing flames erupting from the roof. The address lies in the southwesternmost corner of Northbrook's jurisdiction, close to the boundaries with neighboring towns. Due to the limited availability of fire hydrants in the area—only one hydrant exists for the entire street, located at the Sanders Road entrance—this situation prompted a rapid response from Prospect Heights Fire Protection District’s Tanker 9.
As I arrived on the scene, the atmosphere was tense but controlled. Northbrook Engine 10 was already on site, quickly laying out 5-inch hoses from the hydrant toward the house. By the time the first responders reached the property, it was clear they were dealing with an advanced attic fire accompanied by thick smoke. The initial alarm was escalated to a full-blown working fire incident, which brought additional resources from neighboring departments like Glenview and Wheeling, along with all available units from Northbrook and Prospect Heights’ Tanker 9.
The firefighting effort was intense. Initially, tank water was used until a reliable water supply could be established. It seemed that multiple fire lines were employed to combat the blaze effectively. Northbrook Tower 12 played a crucial role by ventilating the roof using their elevated platform, a strategic move that helped manage the fire's progression. Fortunately, no one was home at the time of the fire, minimizing the risk to life.
Despite the challenges posed by the limited water access, the firefighters worked diligently under pressure. Their efforts included not just extinguishing visible flames but also ensuring the fire didn’t spread further into the attic or other critical areas of the structure. The scene was filled with activity as teams moved strategically to contain the fire.
After the initial attack phase, images captured by photographer Larry Shapiro showed heavy smoke billowing from the house, highlighting the intensity of the situation. Additional photos depicted firefighters entering the premises with hose lines, demonstrating their commitment to tackling the blaze head-on. The coordinated efforts of multiple departments ensured that the fire was eventually brought under control.
Reflecting on the incident, it’s clear how vital teamwork and resourcefulness are during emergencies like these. The presence of multiple agencies underscores the importance of regional cooperation in managing such crises. As I left the scene, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the dedication and professionalism displayed by everyone involved. The ability to respond swiftly and effectively can make all the difference in situations like this one.
