On Wednesday evening, May 25, 2016, firefighters from the Lake Zurich Fire Department responded to a residential fire at 3160 Louise Court in Hawthorn Woods. The incident occurred during a severe thunderstorm that was sweeping through the area. Upon arrival, first responders noticed smoke billowing from the eaves of the home. As the fire spread, it quickly vented through the roof, prompting interior crews to launch an aggressive attack and bring the flames under control within minutes. The situation escalated quickly, leading to the activation of a Box Alarm, which brought in mutual aid from nearly a dozen neighboring fire departments. The storm added complexity to the operation, with heavy rain and strong winds making conditions challenging for the responding crews. Despite the difficult weather, firefighters worked efficiently to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to nearby structures. Several photos submitted by readers and captured by photographer Larry Shapiro provide a visual account of the scene. Images show flames bursting through the roof, firefighters working from a tower ladder, and emergency vehicles responding to the call. One photo highlights metal ramps used to drive over fire hoses, while another captures the aftermath of the fire, including a gutted attic and a damaged garage door.
