On the morning of February 12th, just before 11 AM, the Park Ridge Fire Department received an automatic fire alarm at a four-story apartment building located at 500 Thames Parkway. As they were en route, they got a call reporting a fire on the top floor. The alarm was quickly upgraded to a working fire, and upon arrival, Battalion 35 saw flames bursting from the rear of the top-floor unit. The building has three floors with ten units each. Within minutes of the initial Box Alarm, a second alarm was called, and an EMS Box Alarm was also activated due to the number of residents inside. Park Ridge Engine 35 and Tower 36 arrived first, positioning themselves in front of the building. Tower 36 was used as a standpipe for the attack line, allowing firefighters to enter the fire unit and suppress the majority of the blaze. A 2 ½-inch high-rise pack was brought into the building, fed through a top-floor window to the basket of Tower 36. DesPlaines Engine 62, stationed in the rear, used its deck gun to knock down the burning mansard roof before establishing a proper water supply. Morton Grove Engine (Quint) 4 served as the first aerial device, providing crucial support during the operation. Morton Grove’s Quint responded instead of their usual squad, which was out of service, and was immediately put to work. The fire was confined to the unit of origin, causing only minor damage to neighboring apartments. However, hot spots remained on the mansard roof after the main fire was extinguished, requiring additional efforts to fully secure the area. A line was stretched up the ladder of Engine 4 to provide water to crews on the roof tackling the remaining fire. Firefighters worked diligently to access the parapet and remove all embers. Niles Truck 2 was deployed to the 'B' side of the building, while crews from Norwood Park, Skokie, and Schiller Park provided mutual aid. MABAS Division 3's "Comm 3" unit, along with four chiefs, arrived as part of an IMAT response. Tim Olk, Steve Redick, and Larry Shapiro captured the event, submitting numerous photos and videos from the scene. Tim’s gallery can be viewed here, Steve’s gallery is available here, and Larry’s gallery is also accessible here. Additionally, Steve created a video documenting the incident. Firefighters conducted thorough overhaul in the fire unit, ensuring no hidden embers remained. The incident highlighted the coordination and professionalism of the responding departments, who managed the situation efficiently and safely.
