Newly purchased cars typically go through a break-in period. During this time, improper use can negatively affect fuel efficiency, driving performance, and even the vehicle's overall lifespan. However, it is nearly impossible to buy a new car without going through this phase. This information was shared at the inaugural meeting of the China-Germany Joint Coordinates Testing Center.
Sun Xueming, dean of the Institute of Metrology and Quality Testing for the Chinese partner of the center, explained that the break-in period exists due to the limited precision of three-coordinate measuring instruments used in automotive part testing. These instruments may result in slight deviations between engine components like shafts and bushings. Such discrepancies need to be gradually eliminated through friction during initial driving. Interestingly, some cars from developed countries no longer require a break-in period, thanks to advanced manufacturing techniques. The high-precision testing capabilities of the center aim to complete this process before the vehicle leaves the factory, which holds great importance for Shenzhen’s economic development.
Coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) are widely used across industries such as machinery, electronics, light manufacturing, and automotive. The three-coordinate measuring machine introduced by the center boasts world-leading precision and is considered a leader in its category within China. This advancement is a significant boost for Shenzhen’s machinery industry, which generates an annual output value of 12 billion yuan. With improved measurement accuracy, manufacturers can ensure higher quality, reduce defects, and enhance competitiveness in the global market. This technology not only supports industrial growth but also reinforces Shenzhen’s position as a hub for advanced manufacturing and innovation.
