Recently, China First Heavy Machinery Group Co., Ltd. has signed a significant contract with South Korea's Posco Steel for the export of a 5.5-meter rolling mill. This marks the largest rolling mill China has ever exported and represents the first time that China has supplied key production equipment to a world-renowned steel company. The project highlights China's growing technological capabilities in heavy machinery and its increasing presence in the global steel industry.
The 5.5m rolling mill was designed by Germany’s SMS group but manufactured in China. It is the world’s largest wide-plate rolling mill, weighing a total of 7,173 tons and valued at $36.34 million. The mill consists of two major sections: the rough rolling area and the finishing rolling area, which are the core components of the entire rolling line. The frame of this mill alone weighs 430 tons, making it one of the most complex and high-precision machines in the industry.
Currently, only a handful of companies, including China First Heavy Machinery and another major manufacturer, have the technical expertise to produce such advanced equipment. The project is expected to be completed by November 2009, marking a major milestone for China’s heavy industrial sector and reinforcing its position as a key player in international steel manufacturing.
