According to general knowledge, a bottle of motor oil is supposed to last for around 5,000 kilometers. However, after just over 1,000 km, some drivers are now experiencing serious issues. The oil becomes increasingly diluted and then thickens unexpectedly. In some cases, sludge builds up rapidly, eventually leading to engine damage. Xie Yilin, a distributor from a petrochemical company in Wuhan, has been dealing with complaints from customers since the end of May.
Xie said, “Their cars are hard to start, the coolant temperature is too high, and the oil is forming sludge. It’s like rubber—very sticky.†Faced with these problems, she reached out to the manufacturer, Yongbiao (Wuhan) Petrochemical Company. But the company hasn’t provided a clear solution yet.
At her own company, Xie learned more troubling news: sales representatives who had distributed products nationwide had returned to Wuhan, and some regional managers in Jiangxi and Fujian were even detained locally. Eventually, the company had to pay 50,000 yuan to get them back.
Xie added, “In Jiangxi, a manager named Chen was held there for a week. After that, salespeople from other regions started spreading the word. I used to be a salesman for this company.â€
What exactly went wrong with Yongbiao’s lubricants? On September 4th, accompanied by the dealer, a reporter visited the company at No. 2 Jiangan Road in Hankou’s Jiang’an District. Inside the workshop, only four workers were pouring oil into containers, and the sound of oil being poured could be clearly heard.
Nearby, empty oil cans were piled high. The labels on top showed two different brands. A worker carrying empty cans said, “This oil was returned from across the country. A total of 2,000 tons.â€
In the office, Wang Wei, the sales manager, told the reporter that the company had operated for 10 years and faced such a crisis for the first time. He admitted that they had mixed 10% vegetable oil into the lubricant.
Wang said, “We only added 10%, but it caused so much trouble. My dealers are struggling, and I’m not doing any better. How many of my customers are affected?â€
According to industry sources, the problems reported in Wuhan are linked to the addition of vegetable oil in the lubricants. Although these oils may look good on paper with their physical and chemical properties, the high level of unsaturated hydrocarbons makes them prone to oxidation, sludge formation, and clogging of filters and pipes. This can lead to serious engine issues.
Meanwhile, reports of faulty lubricants have spread across North China. Some companies conducted lab tests and found that the oil was actually a blend of vegetable oil and mineral oil, with vegetable oil making up as much as 20–30%.
