The project titled "Comprehensive Utilization and Development of Fly Ash in Zhungeer Mining Area," led by Dr. Pan Aifang from Chang’an University, has recently been officially recognized by an expert panel. This innovative research has the potential to boost the overall utilization rate of fly ash beyond 90%, significantly enhancing the economic value of key by-products such as alumina and silica.
Traditionally, most methods have focused on converting fly ash into construction materials, which not only leads to the loss of valuable aluminum and rare earth elements but also involves high production costs. To address this challenge, Shenhua Group Zhungeer Energy Co., Ltd. collaborated with Chang’an University to develop more efficient and sustainable solutions. After over a year of dedicated research, they successfully developed an aluminum oxide extraction process for pulverized coal fly ash, along with a carbon dioxide recovery method from sintering furnace waste.
In addition, seven other research outcomes were achieved, including the use of alumina-rich fly ash slag as a building material. The team conducted laboratory experiments to extract alumina from pulverized coal, furnace dust, and coal ash, using a novel approach that combines water and acid for step-by-step elution. They also separated silica using silica gel, creating a new and efficient production technique.
Currently, this advanced technology is undergoing further refinement and is being prepared for broader implementation. With its potential to maximize resource recovery and reduce environmental impact, it represents a major breakthrough in the field of fly ash utilization. The collaboration between industry and academia has proven to be a powerful driver for innovation, paving the way for a more sustainable future in coal ash management.
